Safety for all

Renault takes a comprehensive approach based on the principle of "safety for all". The aim is to provide equal safety for all occupants, regardless of car size.

RENAULT RENEWS ITS COMMITMENT TO ROAD SAFETY THROUGH THE GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY INITIATIVE

The Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI) was funded in 2004 by seven of the worlds largest automotive, including Renault, and oil companies. The GRSI finances and encourages initiatives to promote road safety in large countries with substantial road safety problems such as the ASEAN region, China and Brazil. These problems include pedestrian safety, drinking and driving, helmet use, speed management and seatbelt use.

The GRSI is part of the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) set up by the World Bank in 1999, which brings together the private sector, civil society and the governmental agencies concerned by road safety in countries that are emerging or in transition. Renault is vice-president of the national GRSP associations in Romania and Poland and is a member in Hungary.

On November 20 2009, at the first global ministerial conference on road safety hosted by Moscow, Renault and a number of other manufacturers from the automotive industry who are also members of the GRSI, decided to pursue their shared commitment to road safety for another five years.

For Renault, committing to road safety worldwide is a natural step that reflects its core values. The results of this safety-aware approach can be seen today in the excellence of the Renault range.

PREVENTION

Warning – Help anticipate hazards with audible and visible reminders (seatbelt warning lights and tones).
Assisting – Control unintended speeding, with speed control devices (cruise control and speed limiter).
Supporting – Improve driving environment: automatic headlights and wipers, xenon headlights (Optional on specific models), heat reflecting windscreens, auto-dipping interior mirrors.

CORRECTION

Handling – Active safety engineering: ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), traction control, ESP (Electronic Stability Programme). Roadholding and braking underpin active safety and accident avoidance.

PROTECTION

Vehicle architecture – Vehicle cabins protected by programmed crumpling but remaining rigid in the middle.
Programmed Restraint – Protects the occupants in a collision. The 3rd generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection (SRP) comprises:
• Front pretensioners, connected to the seatbelts which pull the occupant back and down into the seat.
• Load limiters reduce pressure on the occupant’s chest.
• Adaptive airbags absorb impact allowing for the occupant’s weight and position, and impact force.
• Lateral and curtain airbags for side impacts (all models except Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet).
The 3rd generation SRP system guarantees ideal protection of any size or age occupant in every seat.

Renault, the only car manufacturer to have 12 vehicles awarded 5 stars at the Euro NCAP Safety Rating.

Euro NCAP is a totally independent body which anonymously purchase cars for testing. And when it tests them, it goes way beyond the already high European standards. A five-star rating is the ultimate. And we’ve got twelve of them, including five of the models available in Australia (Scenic, Mégane Hatch, Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet, Laguna Hatch and Koleos).
