Here are six icon cars from Renault's three
decades of F1 history. It all began with the world's first turbo-charged
F1 car RS01, which kick-started one of the golden eras of Grand
Prix racing. A laughing stock when it made its debut at
Silverstone in 1977, a year later it scored Renault's first world
championship points.
The pinnacle of Renault's first period in F1 was probably the RE40
which Alain Prost almost won the title with in 1983, whilst its
last and most powerful role of the dice came with RE60 in 1985.
The company then switched to engine supply and the 1986 Lotus 98T
of Ayrton Senna and Johnny Dumfries was arguably its most successful
liason. It was the 1990s that saw Renault's most successful time
in F1 starting with the all conquering Williams Renault FW14B of
Nigel Mansell in 1992 and brought the satisfaction of finally giving
Prost a title with Renault a year later in the Williams FW15C.
From 1992 to 1997 Renault won 6 consecutive Constructors' titles. During this period 5 different drivers won the Drivers' championship driving a Renault engine, including the current world champion M.Schumacher. |
