| The association between Renault and Nigel Mansell
began in 1983 when the future World Champion raced with Lotus, at
the time using Renault engines. But it was in 1991, when Mansell
rejoined Williams that he and Renault forged what would become one
of the most dominate partnerships in F1 history. In the French Grand
Prix at Magny-Cours Mansell took his first win with Renault power
with four more victories following that season, including the British
Grand Prix at Silverstone.
It was 1992, though, that would prove to be his most impressive
and important year in Formula One, becoming World Champion for Williams-Renault.
No-one will ever forget the scenes at Silverstone in that year’s
British Grand Prix as the famous ‘Red 5’ took the chequered
flag – one of a phenomenal nine victories for Mansell that
season.
Mansell left the team at the end of 1992, opting to race in the
US-based Indycar series which he won. Mansell returned to Williams-Renault
in 1994 for a handful of races and took his final F1 victory during
the season-ending Australian Grand Prix after ‘that’
collision between eventual champion Michael Scumacher and Mansell’s
Williams-Renault team-mate Damon Hill.
