Renault Symbioz Hybrid price and specs announced for Australia
Renault Australia has announced prices and specifications for the new Renault Symbioz Hybrid range ahead of order books opening this month and showroom deliveries from next month.
There will be a choice of two hybrid options – mild hybrid and full hybrid – and three variants.
Recommended retail pricing for the MY26 Renault Symbioz Hybrid range is as follows:
• Renault Symbioz Techno Mild Hybrid: $36,990 plus on-road costs
• Renault Symbioz Techno Full Hybrid: $42,990 plus on-road costs
• Renault Symbioz Esprit Alpine Full Hybrid: $45,990 plus on-road costs
It is the first time Renault Australia has launched a full hybrid model – with up to 1000km driving range, according to WLTP tests.
Full hybrid versions of the Renault Symbioz are powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine (80kW/170Nm) paired to an electric motor (36kW/205Nm) and supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack.
The electric motor – rather than the petrol engine – is prioritised during the vehicle’s initial acceleration phase up to approximately 60 km/h.
When driven normally, the vehicle is able to remain in electric mode most of the time in stop-start city driving.
The full hybrid system also recovers energy when the vehicle is braking, coasting or decelerating.
Renault’s “intelligent multi-mode” full hybrid system – protected by 150 patents – uses an electric motor with two gears and a four-speed automatic transmission for the petrol engine.
With more than 15 possible combinations to keep the engine in its most efficient rev range, it provides smooth and responsive acceleration.
Instead of conventional gears, the advanced transmission in full hybrid variants of the Renault Symbioz uses mechanical face plates to engage ratios, relying on electric motors to match speeds and deliver seamless, immediate shifts.
Furthermore, full hybrid variants of the Renault Symbioz start and reverse using electric power, reducing the number of mechanical parts.
The overall design of Renault’s advanced “intelligent multi-mode” full hybrid system reduces friction and weight – and improves fuel efficiency.
The mild hybrid version of the Renault Symbioz is powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine (104kW/245Nm) paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch ‘EDC’ automatic transmission.
Although the Renault Symbioz is categorised as a small SUV, it sits at the larger end of the segment and both variants have generous boot space and rear leg room.
The back seat can also be slid forward 16cm to give owners flexibility to opt for more cargo space or more rear leg room.
Dimensions:
Length: 4412mm
Width: 1797mm
Height: 1567mm
Wheelbase: 2639mm
Boot space (Techno Mild Hybrid):
Minimum boot volume: 563 litres
With rear seat slid forward 16cm: 695 litres
With rear seat stowed: 1668 litres
Boot space (Techno and Esprit Alpine Full Hybrid):
Minimum boot volume: 460 litres
With rear seat slid forward 16cm: 592 litres
With rear seat stowed: 1546 litres
Available as an extra-cost option across all three model variants is a panoramic sunroof – which Renault calls ‘Solarbay’ – that has an embedded filament (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal or PDLC) that can be darkened on demand, a technology usually reserved for high-end luxury cars.
Warranty coverage on the MY26 Renault Symbioz is five years/unlimited kilometres and service intervals are 12 months/30,000km (whichever occurs first).
Warranty coverage on the 1.4kWh battery pack on full hybrid variants is 8 years/160,000km (whichever occurs first).
“The new Renault Symbioz is well positioned to offer Australian motorists a choice of hybrid options in one of the most hotly contested segments of the new-car market,” said Glen Sealey, the General Manager of Renault Australia.
“This is the first time Renault has offered a full hybrid vehicle in Australia.
“This means Symbioz is able to deliver genuine fuel savings at a time when there is significant pressure on petrol prices.
“In addition to excellent fuel efficiency and well-calibrated safety technology, the new Renault Symbioz delivers European design and European handling in a roomy, comfortable package.
“The new Renault Symbioz is well equipped, and arrives in Australian showrooms at an attainable price point.
“Last year we promised six new models over an 18 month period and the new Renault Symbioz is part of that rollout.”
